Tajikistan, officially the Republic of Tajikistan, is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Dushanbe. Tajikistan was historically part of ancient Persian empires and has been influenced by Islamic civilization for centuries. It became part of the Soviet Union in the 20th century and gained independence in 1991. After independence, Tajikistan experienced a civil war (1992–1997), which has shaped its modern political and social landscape today. It is also part of the Silk Road.
Tajikistan has a population of around 10 million. The major ethnic people group are the Tajiks and the major language is Tajik, although Russian is also widely used for business. Their main economy is based on agriculture of cotton and fruits and hydropower is one of its biggest resources. Despite that, Tajikistan is considered one of the poorest nations in Central Asia.
The main religion of Tajikistan is Muslim (primarily Sunni Islam) and religion plays an important cultural role, though public religious expression is regulated by the government. There are small minorities of Christians and other groups.
After many years of interceding for Central Asia and connecting with pastors across the region, God opened the door in 2023 for Pastor Batbold, Regional Director of Central Asia, to meet a small network of pastors in Tajikistan. Although several opportunities to connect were missed, God established clear connection in 2024.
In 2025, River of Life met Pastor Ibrahim of Tajikistan at the Central Asia Pastoral Conference in Uzbekistan. After receiving the vision from Pastor Tong, it took several months of prayer and confirmation for Pastor Ibrahim and his church to seek confirmation for their next steps.
In December 2025, they gave their “yes” to join the River of Life family and were officially welcomed in January 2026.
